Mumbai, Pakistan, Pakistan, and Pakistan

CNN: Mumbai: Hostages freed as PM blames 'outsiders'

I don't know why everyone is getting so worked up about this. Attacks like this have occurred many times over the past couple of years in India - this one just involves Westerners. This wikipedia article has a nice list of attacks since 2001. I count 24, with 8 attacks with over 50 deaths (not casualties, deaths).

Now, the fact that this specifically targeted Westerners is an important development. But the fact that this was so coordinated, yet likely not al-Qaeda, leads me personally to suspect Pakistani, or more likely ISI involvement.

P.S. Sorry for my (severe) lack of articles. I hope to be back now.

It received so much attention because of its scale, and yes, because the attacks were focused on western citizens. It indeed is probably Pakistani, although I don't think it's used in the whole India/Pakistan conflict but rather on Islamic beliefs itself. Good to see you back btw, I've dropped by regularly but never saw any change unfortunately (so I created my own IR blog, feel free to drop by ;)).

undoubtedly ISI. but in contrast, attacks on pakistan, the likes of in Islamabad and others previously may have been carried out with the help of indian RAW.

I think when Westerners are the designated target, the issue becomes a bigger deal. Moreover, as Westerners, broadcasting media such as CNN and NY TImes, feel more pertained to the issue, which kindles them to expand the issue.

My blog was meant to encourage conversation, as yours seems to be. I look forward to coming back - and agree with Yura's comments about the 24/7 style of Western news reporting fanning the flames.

The significance of this attack comes from the fact that this time gunmen went on a multiple hour rampage through India's most crowded and one of the worlds most crowded urban centre's killing people and holding numerous others hostage. It is not the fact that westerners were targetted that has made this attack so prominent in our history as the fact that cream of Indian society and the taj and the oberoi which is most associated with that class of indian society; who have to great extents been spares by such attacks; who were hit this time. As a mumbaikar and as someone who keeps traversing between the rich, middle class and lower class societies in this city for various reasons i know what that means; to be hit where you thought you were invulnerable!
